Network configuration is one of the quickest ways to cut real-world risk, and one of the most neglected. Most small business routers and firewalls were set up once, years ago, and changed only when something needed to work in a hurry.
What we check
Which services can be reached from the internet, and whether they need to be. Firewall rules that nobody remembers adding. Router and firewall firmware that has not been updated. Remote access: how staff and suppliers connect from outside, and with what passwords. Whether guest Wi-Fi and the office network are properly separated.
Remote desktop
The single most common problem we find is remote desktop (RDP) open directly to the internet. It is constantly scanned by automated attacks, and it is a common way for ransomware to get in. We close it and replace it with VPN access, so staff can still work from home without the front door being left open.
What we change
Unneeded ports closed. Remote access moved behind a VPN, with individual logins rather than one shared account. Old rules removed and the rest documented, so the next person knows why each one is there. Firmware brought up to date. Where it helps, networks split so that a problem on one device can't spread everywhere.
Who it suits
Offices with a server, staff who work from home, CCTV or other kit reachable from outside, or anyone who isn't sure what their router is allowing.
Will staff lose remote access while you work?
No. We set up the replacement first, test it with you, then close the old route.
Do we need to buy a new firewall?
Often not. Most improvements are configuration. If your hardware is out of support, we tell you and suggest something proportionate.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the number of sites and devices. You get a price before any work starts.
In many networks the most effective improvement is removing access, not adding more products.
